Routing: WordPress
This guide is for administrators who use WordPress as their website connection. WordPress and Joomla are mutually exclusive: a broadcaster can only have one of the two connected at a time. See Roles and permissions for who has access.
Roles and permissions
This page — like the rest of Settings > Routing, for all platforms — is only reachable for users with the Settings role (the same role used for most other Settings pages, e.g. AI settings and Plan/usage), not a separate WordPress-specific role. Without this role, opening the entire Routing page already shows an error instead of an overview of connected platforms.
What you configure here
When connecting WordPress, you fill in:
- Host — the address of the WordPress website.
- Username and an Application Password — this is not the WordPress user’s regular login password, but a separately generated “application password” from WordPress itself, meant specifically for API access from other applications.
- YouTube embed position (required) — same option as for Joomla: top, after “read more”, or at the bottom of the article.
When you save, Newsroom immediately verifies the details against WordPress. If the username/Application Password combination is wrong, you get a clear error about it. If WordPress’s permalink settings are still set to “Plain”, the connection won’t work and Newsroom reports that the permalink setting needs to be changed.
Host and credentials are fixed after saving — Once connected, you can only still adjust tag settings, category behavior, and image format. To change the host, username, or Application Password, you need to delete the connection and create it again.
If a post has linked audio, Newsroom automatically places it as a playable audio player at the bottom of the post text — with no setting to turn this off. See Media: audio for details.
Tags and categories
- Tag mode — determines what gets published as a WordPress tag: keywords, regions, or both together.
- Publish regions as categories — a separate toggle, independent of tag mode: this makes regions also end up as a WordPress category, not just as a tag.
- Category linking — defines which Newsroom category corresponds to which WordPress category (same kind of linking as for Joomla).
- Image format — jpg or webp for uploaded images. If you choose webp but a specific photo has no webp variant available, Newsroom automatically publishes that photo as jpg instead — the setting is a preference, not a hard requirement.
Set a WordPress category for every category you use, so the post appears in the right category.
“Publish regions as categories” works by name, not by a fixed mapping. When publishing, Newsroom searches WordPress live for a category with exactly the same name as the region. Make sure your WordPress categories use the same names as your Newsroom regions/areas if you use this option.
User mapping
Under user mapping, you link a Newsroom user to a WordPress author, so posts appear in WordPress under the correct author name.
Newsroom does not automatically match an author by email address. Without an explicit mapping, the post is attributed to the WordPress user of the connected API access itself. So set up the mapping deliberately per user if distinct author names matter.
Importing media
Media import lets you pull in existing WordPress media as stock photos in Newsroom:
Review the preview
Newsroom first shows a preview of the media that would be imported.
Confirm the import
Only after explicit confirmation does the actual import start in the background.
Wait for the import
Only one import can run per broadcaster at a time (it’s locked for a few hours). If you start a new import while the previous one is still running, Newsroom reports that an import is already in progress.
Workflow (setting up the connection)
Create an Application Password in WordPress
Do this for the relevant WordPress user, not with the regular password.
Open Settings > Routing and select WordPress
Fill in the host, username, and the Application Password.
Choose the YouTube embed position
Also required here, regardless of whether you already publish videos.
Set tag mode, categories, and image format
Determine here how keywords/regions and images end up in WordPress.
Link users where needed
Add user mapping for editors whose WordPress author name needs to be correct.
Publication per post is mandatory — Once WordPress is connected, the WordPress toggle in a post’s publication step is always on and cannot be turned off. See Publishing to your channels for that step.
